Manufactured by Midway and released in 1991, the Addams Family pinball machine is based on the 1991 movie of the same name. It experienced immense popularity, selling more than 20,000 units to become the best-selling pinball game since the 1930s. Players attempted to gain points by sending their pinball flying through the Addams mansion and surrounding areas, including a graveyard. Stars Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston, who played Gomez and Morticia, recorded many movie quotes that can be heard during the game. It was also the first pinball machine to contain CPU-controlled flippers. At random intervals, the computer used sensors above the flippers to calculate an oncoming ball's speed and trajectory, and took momentary control away from the player to hit the ball. Players praised the game for its interesting playing field, excellent use of movie graphics and sound, and for providing challenges that appealed both to novice and expert players.
