Patola (Vagh Haathi Bhat) sari

A double ikat patola sari in black, red, white and yellow – its body woven with processional elephants carrying howdahs and tigers (alongside smaller human figures, plant and bird motifs) set within four rows of square, floral-bordered registers in alternating directions. Both ends of the sari are decorated with additional floral and geometrical bands, followed by simple bands of yellow, green and maroon. The use of the term haathi, instead of the more specifically Gujarati kunjar, used in other patterns with elephants, is explained by its appearance only to refer to patterns meant primarily for export.
