Because of the ubiquitous nature of the grinding stone, it is called by a variety of names across Haryana, of which silvatta is the most common. The surface of the grinding stone is dressed to create a rough texture which enables the grinding process. When not in use, the grinding stone is stored by placing it upright against a wall.
