(...) While walking, I heard fragments of conversations. There was only one topic today – Mala and Edek. Edek and Mala had become symbols of freedom. It was already dark when I reached block number four, having been stopped by interested acquaintances. I called Jurek outside. We found ourselves behind the block, on the side of the Gypsy Camp, in a quiet corner where we could more or less speak freely. Jurek was very careful. It was better that we were not seen together. The devil never sleeps. He told me what was going on at the Blockführerstube from the moment that Mala arrived and Edek went to change his clothes in the Kartoffelbunker. It was the same moment when the SS-man, Perschel, got on his bicycle – which was a lucky coincidence – Mala went into the guardhouse, where there was only one SS-Auseherin present. Jurek, meanwhile, was pretending that he was repairing the lock in the bathroom, which had been previously damaged by Edek. The commode, or rather washbasin, was also brought there earlier and placed, prepared there on the side. Even if one of the SS-Men would have caught him and demanded to know what he is doing here, he could have easily explained himself. After a moment, Mala appeared. He locked her in the bathroom, where the toolbox stood and in it were the overalls, which she was dress herself in. One had to be very quick, since at any moment, someone could turn up. Jurek, still pretending to be repairing the lock, impatiently waited for the moment when Mala would be ready. The seconds passed, which seemed never-ending, but Mala was not coming out. He started to get her to work quicker by whispering, but to no avail. Impatient with the long silence inside the bathroom, he opened the door slightly and saw a helpless girl standing, who was pale and shaken. She made the impression that she was unconscious. Without much consideration, he locked himself in the room with Mala, dressed her in the overalls, placed the washbasin over her head and after that, literally pushed her outside by force and led her in the direction of the Kartoffelbunker. Mala came along obediently with her teeth chattering loudly. SMA-B. Collection of Testimonies: t.9, k.115
