West african lungfish

Senckenberg Nature Museum Frankfurt

Senckenberg Nature Museum Frankfurt
Frankfurt am Main, Germany

The West African Lungfish has thread-like pectoral and pelvic fins and very small scales. African lungfishes survive the four-to-six-month-long dry season by burrowing in the mud and estivating, surrounded by a slime capsule. During the spawning season, when the rivers carry water again, the male builds a tube-shaped nest, which he carefully guards.
