The LVTP7, developed for transporting troops, was deployed with the US Marine Corps in 1972. Unlike previous amphibious armored vehicles, the LVTP7 had a water jet propulsion system which helped it move faster in the water. The LVTP7 could turn on a dime both on land and at sea, and its special aluminum alloy chassis made it light and wellprotected.
The Korean Marine Corps adopted the LVTP7 in 1974 for amphibious landing operations. The first Korean LVTP7s were slowly retired starting in 1985, when the improvedperformance LVTP7A1 was introduced.
