10c Paul Laurence Dunbar stamp

The 10-cent Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906) stamp was first available on May 1, 1975, at Dayton, Ohio. Walter D. Richards designed the stamp. The son of ex-slaves and a great American poet, Dunbar often wrote pieces using a negro dialect. He became widely known after the publication of his collection Lyrics of a Lowly Life. He composed the school song for Tuskegee Institute. He died of tuberculosis on February 9, 1906.

Walter D. Richards designed the stamp, which was issued in sheets of fifty, with an initial printing of 140 million.
