Belgian Congo1895

Smithsonian's National Postal Museum

Smithsonian's National Postal Museum
Washington, DC, United States

This 1895 stamp features Stanley Falls (now Boyoma Falls), a famous natural wonder. Waterlow and Sons printed 240,000 copies of this 10c blue stamp, part of the third emission for the Belgian Congo. Two sheets of fifty stamps each are believed to have been printed with an inverted center, of which approximately 40 are known today. Most of the remaining copies are mint. Only two are known on cover.
