The 10-cent George Washington and the 5-cent Benjamin Franklin were the first federal postage stamps issued by the Post Office Department following the Congressional Act of March 3, 1847. Both stamps were issued July 1, 1847 and were printed by the New York firm of Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson (RWH&E).
