Through this map, the scope of the Portuguese Discoveries is clear, showing how in just under 100 years the Portuguese had increased their geographical knowledge to the point of creating a map in which the represented landmasses are recognizable by today’s standards. The “Cantino Map” contains the oldest representation of the Brazilian territory that has come to our knowledge. Dating from 1502, this planisphere shows the result of the Portuguese voyages of maritime exploration carried out until the beginning of the 16th century.
