The Wright brothers used gravity to fuel and cool their engine on their 1903 Flyer. A gravity-fed 1.5-quart fuel tank was mounted to a forward strut above the engine. A water reservoir mounted to a front strut supplied water to cooling jackets around the engine cylinders.
