Embroidered silk postcard featuring '1917' and the words 'Souvenir de Belgique' [Remember Belgium]. The individual numbers of the year '1917' are composed of the Allied flags - Union Jack, Japanese, Belgian, Italian, French, American and Australian flags. Two purple and yellow pansies also feature in the design. Silk postcards reached their peak of popularity and production during the First World War. Mostly hand embroidered by French women at home, the designs were sent to factories for cutting and mounting on card.
