Left hand front view of 1919 Lincoln Six Tourer. Car manufacturer 'Lincoln Motor Car Coy' claimed that their Tourer was specifically designed to suit Australian conditions. Made from locally and imported parts the Tourer gained a reputation as reliable, easy to control and attractive. The Lincoln Tourer demonstrates an early attempt to establish a motor industry in Australia.

- Provenance: Charles Innes, the founder of the company, migrated to Australia from Scotland in 1908. As an engineer he had a vision for an Australian produced car designed for Australian road conditions. In 1918 his company constructed the first Lincoln made from local and imported components. In June 1918 a fire destroyed the Lincoln Motor Car Coy property, including vehicles and equipment. Charles was uninsured so found himself at a huge loss. Impressively, he re-established production. Two years later, in 1920, Detroit-based Lincoln Motor Co. took Charles to court over the rights to the use of the name 'Lincoln' in the Australian market. Robert Menzies who later became the Prime Minister of Australia, appeared as Junior Counsel on behalf of Charles. The result resolved that both companies were entitled to use the name. The company rose and fell through the 1920s and despite producing quality vehicles the Lincoln could never compete with mass production imports. After eight years, and up to 350 completed vehicles, Lincoln Motor Car Coy closed in 1926. Charles can arguably be regarded as one of the real pioneers of the Australian motor industry. This car was donated to the Museum in 2007 through the Cultural Gifts Program by the Turner family.
