Left hand front view of 1959 Chevrolet Bel-Air Sedan. The Bel-Air was produced by Chevrolet from 1950 to 1981. The 1959 Bel-Air shared the same chassis as its predecessors but incorporated a whole new design. Its styling is consistent with the US passion at the time for large, spacious and powerful vehicles. The 1959 Bel-Air is longer, wider and heavier than the previous models, featuring low headlights, cat’s eye tail lights and flat wing shaped tail fins. The mechanics of the ’59 remained the same, and it was the last Chevrolet to offer a six cylinder engine; later models came with the more powerful V8.
General-Motors Holden in Australia imported various US designed vehicles, such as Chevrolets and assembled them locally. The 1959 Bel-Air was imported from Michigan and assembled at the GM Holden factory in Dandenong, Victoria. It was the first model in Australia to offer optional automatic transmission. However, it was a not a huge seller on the Australian market.
