Front and left hand side view. The Monaro is widely regarded as one of the greatest muscle cars built in Australia. Produced by Holden between 1968 and 1977, and then again in 2001 to 2006, the Monaro feels powerful and looks powerful. Muscle cars were introduced in the 1960s and their appearance continues to be popular.
The HT Monaro replaced the HK model. The HT includes a plastic grille, ‘go-faster’ stripes down the centre of the car, and twin air scoops in the bonnet. The steel bushings of the HK were replaced with neoprene rubber front suspension bushes making the ride much more comfortable and quieter. The HT was also available in vibrant new colours, such as orange and bronze.
Monaro’s were also successful in production series racing. One famous example is Norm Beechy and his yellow HT 350 GTS which won the inaugural Australian Touring Car Championship in 1970. In many competitions the Holden Monaro defeated its direct opponent the Ford GT Falcon.
It is believed that only 700 HT Monaro’s were manufactured.
