Front and left hand side view. The Leyland P76 was produced by Leyland Australia between 1973 and 1975. It was named the P76 after its development code name ‘Project 76’. It was also affectionately nicknamed the ‘wedge’ on account of its shape.
During the 1970s there was high demand for vehicles in Australia and Leyland rushed assembly of the P76 to release it to the market. The result was a vehicle of poor quality and reputation of being unreliable. The P76 was labelled as a lemon. Despite its shortcomings the V8 model was awarded the 1973 Wheels’ ‘Car of the year’ and continues to be considered an iconic Australian car with a loyal following.
