A leader in the Nouvelle Figuration and Figuration Narrative schools of art, Gilles Aillaud was known for his paintings that focus on two primary themes—animals in zoos and scenic landscapes—and stylistically are very different from this commissioned piece. Consisting of scribbled dots and dashes in the colors of the French flag, Aillaud created a scene of a crowd focusing on the action before them on court between two players, with the ball caught in midair.
