1989 Roland-Garros Championships

A member of the Transavantgarde (“beyond the avant garde”) art movement, Nicola de Maria’s art is bright, colorful, and largely non-figurative, with an almost child-like essence. He describes himself as “a poet, and I write with the colors on my fingers.” His creation for the championships is devoid of any recognizable tennis material, but his composition represents the joy, excitement, and essence of the event.
