An official poster for the 1999 FIFA World Cup tournament, held in the United States of America.
The competition took place between 19 June and 10 July, with sixteen teams competing across eight different venues. Organisers expected an increased interest in the women's game off the back of the US' triumph in the 1996 Olympic Games, and were not disappointed.
An average of 37,000 per game flocked to the American football stadiums to watch the Women's World Cup, with over 90,000 spectators bearing witness to the USA's dramatic penalty shootout victory over China in the final.
In all, over one million fans attended the Women's World Cup - a record that stood until 2015, when Canada attracted 1.3 million spectators to the tournament. The USA lifted the trophy on both occasions!
