Diprotodon's square, simple cheek teeth, with two ridges (called lophs) that ran crosswise between the tongue and cheek, were ideal for crushing and shredding the increasingly tough vegetation that evolved as forests were replaced by open savannah. This 3D-printed cheek tooth shows the density difference from the hard external enamel of the tooth (green), to the less dense dentine (pink) and the pulp cavity, which housed the nerves and blood vessels supplying the tooth.
