This study of a head shows one of the first work carried out by Michelangelo with the technique of sanguine. The drawing was probably carried out on a male model but the critics, starting with Berenson, identifies in it a preparatory study for the Madonna of the Tondo Doni, dating it, therefore, around 1504. Contrary, it is incongruent, in stylistic terms, that the drawing might be linked to a prerparatory study for the Giona’s head of the Sistine Chapel.
