The undated Boats In the Fog - İzmit painting, signed “Kenan,” depicts a pier extending from the rocks, with a moored sailboat and a launch (kotra) heading toward them. In the composition, the only vivid color is the red-painted stripe on the boat tied to the pier; the otherwise dismal gasoline-blue shoreline gradually blends into the gray of the mist as it recedes. The sun behind the mist layer reveals its presence more through the bright reflection on the sea than by itself. Executed with loose brushstrokes, the work conveys the artist’s distinctive sense of atmosphere.
