Colour patches were introduced by the Australian army in 1915 to distinguish units within army divisions. During the Second World War AIF units reinstated the colour patches of their First World War counterparts on a grey background. This patch designated the 2/23 Aust Inftanry Battalion unit. Following the siege of Tobruk a new patch was designed to recognise the unit's role in the conflict.
