REGENERATION PROJECT IN SPACE, BUILDINGS AND PUBLIC AREAS THROUGH PUBLIC WORKS OF CONTEMPORARY ART
TOR MARANCIA DISTRICT, ROME
In 2014 a Memorandum of Understanding between ATER of the City of Rome, the Cultural Association 999 and the Municipality VIII district of Rome gave rise to the BIG CITY LIFE project involving the inhabitants of the Tor Marancia district through a participatory approach. ATER assigned the façades of 11 buildings it owned in the Tor Marancia district to the Cultural Association 999. There, 22 artists from ten different countries worked on their paintings, transforming the neighborhood into a permanent open-air museum. By bringing art into the everyday life of a community, the virtuous process helped recover the urban role of the neighborhood, giving it centrality and visibility. It also developed a sense of community and belonging among the inhabitants, who took part in the whole project during the selection of the works and their creation and now contribute to their protection and valorization. Using paints, rollers, brushes, sprays and arm lifts they created an extraordinary urban adventure that brought together public institutions, organizers, artists and inhabitants with positive and above all long-term results.
