“Cantiere Aperto” is a unique experience in Italy for the collective recovery of the Social Theatre of Gualtieri, abandoned since the late 70s and then reopened in 2009 by the association of the same name. The project started in 2011, when the time came to restore the old wooden stalls, because of structural problems: the need for refurbishment, together with the lack of economic resources, led the association to involve the citizenry in the project, creating the first experience of a theatre restored by its own regular audience. Besides restoration of the wooden stalls, different areas of the theater have been recovered so far; the Municipality sponsors the costs of materials. The work by Cantiere Aperto is in line with the long-term design plan for the future of the theatre, which prompted the architectural project carried out by the Association and the Municipality of Gualtieri.
