TEMPORARY INTERVENTIONS IN VACANT LOTS

The “estonoesunsolar” program is an urban regeneration strategy whose aims are temporary interventions in empty plots and vacant land. Developed at a time of very severe crisis, it sought to demonstrate a new urban strategy, through public participation processes, by approaching the design and management of the commons in an original way. A series of micro-interventions of urban acupuncture sought to give an answer to citizens’ daily problems, generating new opportunities and meeting places. These actions have managed to regenerate the degraded areas of the suburbs. It all stems from a reflection on the new role of the architect as a conductor of opportunities to redesign the existing city. Similarly, the program gave voice to the citizens to exercise their right to reclaim urban voids. “Estonoesunsolar” proposes courses of action intended to give back, temporarily, dignity to a degraded urban landscape. It is not a definitive answer, but a way of living the “meanwhile” of an unresolved situation that has left many scars on the city. The aim is to propose flexible alternatives to the extreme rigidity of canonical planning.
