MUSEUM AND CULTURAL SPACE
CASAL DI PRINCIPE, CASERTA
“Light Overcomes the Shadow” is an art exhibition of seventeenth-century artworks, mostly belonging to the Uffizi gallery in Florence, exhibited for the first time in a villa confiscated from the Camorra at Casal di Principe. The villa, in its architectural form, exactly reflects the false values of a place that has gradually lost its ties with reality. The false friezes, dummy columns and love of excess enshrine an elusive idea of the “aesthetic” that has never belonged to architecture or civilization.
The idea of the project was to cover the whole villa with a new structure, a second skin detached from the building but that reveals what lies beneath it. Scaffolding tubes and red debris netting (as used on construction sites) sheathe the whole building, which symbolically represents a work in progress, emphasizing the work that remains to be done in these regions to bring justice to honest citizens.
