ARSENAL OF PEACE – MULTIPURPOSE CENTER
TURIN

In 1983, the Sermig association, founded by Ernesto Olivero, was given the opportunity to reuse the former military arsenal, built in the mid-nineteenth century. At that time the abandoned complex of pavilions covering 30,000 square metres were in a really bad condition.
Over the years Sermig gradually renewed all the available spaces by targeted and progressive projects to create the Arsenal of Peace.
The renovation was inspired and accompanied by the association’s charitable aims and social purposes, providing hospitality services, education, cultural activities and spiritual meetings.
The regeneration of these spaces takes place in a perspective of efficient and economical functionality, ensuring the versatility of all spaces, at the same time creating differentiated spaces with a recognizable character, that make the subsequent interventions detectable. The regeneration of the military complex was made possible by multiple donations, and has become an ambitious process to curb the urban decay afflicting the surrounding urban area, restoring important meeting spaces and services to the citizens.
