The 2015 FIFA World Cup in Canada saw the pool of teams expand from sixteen to twenty-four.
The first stage consisted of six groups rather than four, and four of the third-placed teams would also make it through to the knockout stages. The number of games increased from 32 to 52 overall, contributing to a record number of attendees overall.
The hosts were knocked out in the quarter-final stage by England, but near neighbours the USA made it through to the final, defeating Japan 5-2 in Vancouver.
