The Postal Service honored Dr. Virginia Apgar with the issuance of a 20-cent definitive stamp on October 24, 1994, in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Apgar was a physician, anesthesiologist, and pioneer in research for the prevention and treatment of birth defects. Additionally, she developed the widely used Apgar Score for evaluating the health of newborns.
Designed by Robert Anderson of Lexington, Massachusetts, and modeled by Ron Centra, the stamp was an addition to the Great Americans Series. The Banknote Corporation of America, printed the stamps in intaglio process in sheets of 100.
