Canberra, Australia

Men of B Troop, 14 Field Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery, pull a 25-pounder gun through dense jungle near Uberi, on the Kokoda Trail in the Owen Stanley Range in September 1942. They are being assisted by the 2/1st Australian Pioneer Battalion.
Thomas Fisher, who took this image, was an Australian army photographer committed to communicating the realities of the Papua campaign to the Australian public. He had been a press photographer in Sydney before enlisting in May 1940; was appointed a photographer with the Military History and Information Section (MHIS) the following year. Fisher regularly composed his subjects using visual or graphic motifs, and his work is some of the best produced by the MHIS photographers. Lieutenant Fisher was the only person to be killed in action while serving as an Australian official photographer. On 16 November 1942, the barge in which he was travelling was bombed then strafed by four Japanese Zeros. His body was never found.
