Gift coin. A series of 100 such coins was minted ‘by the order of His
Imperial Majesty’ at the St Petersburg Mint in January 1876. The
coin was commissioned by and intended for Grand Duke Vladimir
Alexandrovich (1847–1909), the third son of Emperor Alexander II and
Empress Maria Alexandrovna, and the brother of Emperor Alexander
III. Vladimir Alexandrovich held many offices in the Russian army, at
the court, in the Russian government, and in scholarly and art related
establishments. In February 1876, he was appointed president of the
Imperial Academy of Fine Arts.
