25c Frederick Douglass stamp

This Prominent Americans Issue stamp depicts Frederick Douglass, an African-American orator, writer and statesman. Though born into slavery in Maryland, Douglass was able to learn how to read and write. He successfully escaped to New York, where he married a free black woman. He wrote about his life as a slave and became an abolitionist orator. He lived in Europe for a short time, until his friends could purchase his freedom. He served as an advisor to five Presidents.
