Alfred Nickisch was a popular landscape painter related with the Karkonosze Mountains. With friends Otto Fischer and Heinrich Tüpke, also painters, he went on winter open-air workshops in the mountains. They took place in extreme conditions and often at risk to life and health. Nickisch painted his pictures from nature, often using pure and saturated colors, which made him closer to the impressionists. His favorite time of the year was thaw, when green was slowly emerging, but there were still stretches of snow visible. The presented picture shows a mountain view from the Karkonosze during this season of the year.
