Foster's Sydney Ironman North Bondi - Trevor Hendy Centre
L-R: Craig Riddlington, Unknown, Trevor Hendy, Scott Thomson
6th of November 1988.
On the friday a southerly hit Sydney with winds so powerful that even the heavy Forsters 'Apex' advertising frames blew over. Saturday morning brought waves so large that even the competitive elite of Surf Lifesaving could not be expected to attempt the surf at South Bondi. This resulted in a quick re-design of the course and last minute briefing of the competitors. These conditions stretched North Bondi organisation skills to the limit. At 7.00am with not a buoy laid, with on IRB upside down at Ben Buckler, the situation looked grim. The ominous presence of the television crew was a constant reminder of the 9.00am live broadcast. The results were Trevor Hendy, Craig Riddington, Dwane Thuys followed by Darren Mercer. North Bondi's own ironman Scott Thomson ended up 9th.
