This large abstract painting is one in a long series Elaine de Kooning made, all focusing on Jules Dalou's sculpture of the Greek mythological figure Silenus, on view in the Jardin du Luxembourg, Paris. De Kooning served as the first Lamar Dodd Visiting Professor at the University of Georgia, but she painted this work in her studio in East Hampton, New York, basing it on the watercolor sketches she made in Paris.
