Beijing, China

The regal robe has a round collar, left-over-right lapel, horse-hoof cuffs, and a pleated skirt below the waistline. The robe is made of plain, bright yellow satin. The upper-most part of the robe is embroidered with four front-facing dragons in an intricate pattern that covers the chest, shoulders, and upper back; the outline of this sprawling pattern resembles the calyx of a persimmon. Around the dragons are polychrome clouds, rocks, and waves. In dynastic times, this design was reserved exclusively for the emperor and represents the auspicious meanings of longevity and blessing. An additional forty-three embroidered dragons are found on the robe in front-facing, running (i.e., in motion), or roundel configurations.
Attached to the robe is a collar-drape of mineral-blue satin embroidered with motifs of gold running dragons; it is lined with red satin woven with golden motifs. Two bright yellow tassels with jewels hang from the back of the garment; these are known as beiyun counterbalances. The horse-hoof shaped cuffs are decorated with gold running dragon designs on a mineral-blue satin ground; the fur lining of the cuffs is evident from a small amount of fur that protrudes from within. The yellow sleeves are part of the larger piece of plain, bright yellow satin of which the robe is made. The overlapping-lapel on the front of the robe is decorated with five copper buttons that are gilt and chiseled with motifs; the collar-drape is embellished with three of these ornate buttons.
This robe is part of a major category of imperial garb known as ceremonial dress, as utilized by the Qianlong Emperor of the Qing dynasty. It is decorated with the twelve imperial symbols (shier zhang); these and all the other decorative designs are outlined by round golden threads. The artistry of the embroidery is exquisite, and diverse needlecraft techniques were used in the production process. The lavish color scheme complements the harmonious, natural shading of the designs.
Attached to the robe, a yellow band serves as a tag with an ink inscription noting the wearer—Gaozong (the Qianlong Emperor)—and a detailed listing of the accompanying jewels.
