Ammi Phillips (1788-1865) was an itinerant artist who worked mostly in the border areas of New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. “Girl in Red Dress with Cat and Dog”, ca. 1830-1835, is typical of his simplified approach to portrait painting and his sensitive treatment of faces.
