Jelly Roll Morton was born Ferdinand LaMenthe Morton in 1890. A professional pianist from the age of 12, Morton left his home in New Orleans and went on the road playing ragtime in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. Among Morton's more than 150 jazz classics are "King Porter Stomp," "Kansas City Stomp," and "Dead Man Blues."
