32c "Mahoning" stamp

Franz Kline (1910-1962) came from his native Pennsylvania to New York City in the late thirties, and by 1950 emerged as a major exponent of action painting among the Abstract Expressionist group. Though non-representational, “Mahoning”, 1956, recalls modern industrial and urban structures.

This stamp was one of the "Four Centuries of American Art" commemorative stamps issued on August 27, 1998, in Santa Clara, California. The pane features twenty American paintings. An inscription on the back of each stamp describes the painting and artist.
