32c "The Fog Warning" stamps

One of the greatest realists during the second half of the 19th century, Winslow Homer (1836-1910) painted “The Fog Warning” in 1885. Its depiction of the strenuous work of halibut fishing was an appropriate celebration of human strength and courage.

This stamp was one of the "Four Centuries of American Art" commemorative stamps issued on August 27, 1998, in Santa Clara, California. The pane features twenty American paintings. An inscription on the back of each stamp describes the painting and artist.
