After traveling to Europe in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Maurice Brazil Prendergast helped expose American audiences to modern French artists like Paul Cézanne and Henri Matisse through his own bold contrasting colors. Prendergast was a part of the 1908 landmark exhibition The Eight, which showed works featuring avant-garde styles for the first time. This landscape, like many by Prendergast, clearly reflects the influence of European modernism in its saturated colors and large, chunky brushstrokes.
