Mr. Choi Sang-gyu was commander of Third Company, 36th Regiment, Fifth Division of the Korean Army. In 1954, his company took part in operations to mop up armed communist guerrillas on Deogyusan Mountain. He donated a pistol and ammunition seized from the armed communist guerrilla Park Chan-bong.
