This pictorial piece belongs to a series that Rafael Barradas made with the theme of the "carriage" on the public thoroughfare, as attested by very similar paintings in the National Museum of Visual Arts in Montevideo. It is also a recurring motif in Joaquín Torres García's paintings of the period, perhaps due to the contradictory character of this means of transport, anachronistic in the modern city. "The Old Carriage" has an austere compositional structure with a clear delimitation of its parts. It is composed of simple, interwoven forms, with a uniform color predominating in each of them, in such a way that the perception of the whole is immediate and unitary.
