The Bridge

Benode Behari Mukherjeemid 20th century

National Gallery of Modern Art

National Gallery of Modern Art
New Delhi, India

Among the two most gifted students of Nandalal Bose, Benode Behari Mukherjee left behind a body of paintings that purely celebrated nature. The most expressionist of Benodebehari Mukherjee’s paintings, there is brooding wildness to ‘The Bridge’. There is both a mystery and menace lurking in the untamed vegetation jostling against the structure of the bridge. The loose, vigorous brushwork in the painting generates a great deal of excitement.
