The Post Office Department issued the 4-cent Nursing commemorative stamp through the Washington, DC, post office on December 28, 1961. The stamp, issued to honor the nursing profession, features a young woman lighting the traditional candle, symbolizing her dedication to the profession.
Designed by Alfred Charles Parker, the stamp was printed on the Giori press and issued in panes of fifty stamps each. An initial printing of 100 million stamps was authorized.
