This watercolor shows Edgar Osborne (1890-1978) in the uniform of the 2nd/14th London Regiment (known as the London Scottish) during the First World War. The artist, John Chaplin, has not been definitely identified, but may be Private Frank John Chaplin (1897-1918) of 'B' Company, 2nd/14th battalion of the London Regiment, who is buried in Jerusalem War Cemetery.

Edgar Osborne joined the London Regiment on 6 December 1915 and served in the Balkans, Egypt and Palestine. He was demobilised in 1919, by which time he had achieved the rank of Lance Corporal.
