Its official language is Concani, but there are still people in this state who speak Portuguese, due to the dominance of Portugal in the region for over 400 years. Its main cities are Vasco da Gama, Pangim, Margão and Mapuçá. Goa, from 1510, was the capital of the Portuguese State of India, having been integrated in India after being taken by the Indian army in 1961, defeating the small Portuguese military forces present.
