(The rioters ravaged only shops in their coal pits and it is said that no shops retailing rice in the towns around the pits were ravaged.)
All the policemen were sent to suppress the riots but they would not use their sabers and the riots would not cease. Instead, the rioters became more and more angry and desperate, and were furious enough to shout, “Don’t you policemen eat rice?” or “Beat them away!”
