This stamp honoring frontier artist Charles M. Russell and featuring a reproduction of his painting titled "Jerked Down" was issued through the Great Falls, Montana, post office on March 19, 1964. In 1964 the painting hung in the Thomas Gilcrease Institute of American History and Art at Tulsa, Oklahoma. This was the fourth stamp in the Fine Arts Series, which began in 1961 with the Frederic Remington painting.
Designed by William K. Schrage, this stamp was printed on the Giori press and issued in panes of fifty stamps each. An initial printing of 125 million stamps was authorized.
